There are actually two different types of birth control pills. They work differently and can have different side effects. The combined pill (COC) contains both oestrogen and progesterone, which stop your ovaries from releasing an egg each month. The mini pill, or progestogen only pill, only contains one hormone and works by thickening your cervical mucus to prevent sperm reaching an egg.
